Abstract

This paper provides an overview of the conservatisms inherent in current fracture mechanics assessment methodologies and practices. This is mainly with respect to the UK R6 and BS7910 methodologies but several of the aspects considered will also be common to other methods. Where appropriate, recent and current work aimed at understanding and reducing conservatisms are highlighted. The overview is associated with the fracture evaluations of limiting defect size and fatigue crack growth.
