Vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC), endothelial cells (EC), and fibroblasts exist in a dynamic mechanical environment and can sense and respond to mechanical stimuli in vivo (McKnight and Frangos ). It is becoming more and more clear that complex dynamics not only influences vascular tone but also SMC proliferation (see Dancu et al. ) and extracellular matrix turnover (Cummins et al. ) by stimulating cell activity.
