Austenitic stainless steel specimens were fatigue tested under various conditions involving exposure to hydrogen. Some of the experimental parameters that were investigated include long-term exposure to hydrogen (138 MPa at 300°C for 15 days), surface preparation (polishing compared to plasma-cut), intermittent 1 atm hydrogen exposure in-between fatigue cycles, welding and type of filler metal. Bending fatigue of austenitic stainless sheet of 0.9 mm thickness was investigated. Preliminary results indicate an effect on bending fatigue life from weld sample preparation condition.
