Major advances have occurred within this past century in the technology of power transmission and gearing. This fact was amply demonstrated by the numerous technical papers presented at the International Symposium on Gearing and Transmissions in 1972 at San Francisco, at the Design Engineering Technical Conference in 1977 at Chicago, and at the Century 2 International Power Transmissions and Gearing Conference in 1980 at San Francisco. Many areas of gear technology were covered such as Gear Applications, Geometry, Materials, Metallurgy, Manufacturing Loads and Stresses, Tribology, Traction Drives, etc. A few of the developments, which may be considered as advancing the state-of-art of power transmission, will be described here.
