This paper describes the evolution of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code from its inception in 1911 to the year 2000. It begins with the need of State government to protect its citizenry from the growing frequency of boiler explosions to its current stature as an international standard that facilitates global trade and commerce.
